Brookings Publication mentions possibility of ‘Horrific Provocation’ to Trigger Iran Invasion [ 06/30/09 ] "Military action. This is as acutely on the mind of the current chickenhawks, as the invasion of Iraq was on that of the neocons in the last couple of decades. Apparently, the authors feel compelled to give a justification for the bravura of their manuscript. ‘We chose to consider this extreme and highly unpopular option partly for the sake of analytical rigor and partly because if Iran responded to a confrontational American policy- such as an airstrike, harsh new sanctions, or efforts to foment regime change- with a major escalation of terrorist attacks (or more dire moves against Israel and other American allies), invasion could become a very “live” option.’..."

Apocalypse Not: Behind the Swine Flu Hysteria [ 06/28/09 ] "At the height of the swine flu pandemic this spring, when the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was recommending that schools with cases of H1N1 be closed for 14 days and Mexico was still on lockdown, the epidemiology community already suspected the world wasn't ending. Why? The numbers came in: case fatality rate (how many infected people are dying) and replication rate (how many others an infected person will transmit the illness to — "R-zero," in disease-speak). H1N1 had an RØ of about 1.3, high enough to spread the virus but low enough that a strong isolation program could break its back. Its case fatality rate was a wussy 1.9 percent in Mexico and 0.1 percent worldwide. By comparison, the 1918 Spanish flu had an RØ of 2.7 and a case fatality rate of up to 5 percent, making it far more deadly. A real apocalypse, like the killer flu in The Stand — Stephen King's opus of epidemiologic eschatology — would be off the chart, with an RØ of 5 to 6 and a case fatality rate of 99 percent ..."

29 Structural & Civil Engineers Cite Evidence for Controlled Demolition of All 3 WTC High-Rises on 9/11 [ 06/19/09 ] "The symmetry of collapse struck Paul Mason, a structural engineer in Melbourne, Australia, and Dennis Kollar, P.E. (licensed Professional Engineer in Wisconsin). Kollar was troubled by the collapses’ “totality and uniformity” and thefact that the mass of debris remained centered on the building core all the way down. The towers should have fallen “with increasing eccentricity as the collapse progressed,” writes Howard Pasternack, P.E. These systematic collapses required that many structural connections not only fail “nearly simultaneously,” but also “in sequential order,” wrote Frank Cullinan, P.E.,who designs bridges in Northern California. DiMasi, 64, and three co-defendants were indicted on federal corruption charges this month for allegedly pocketing thousands of dollars in exchange for helping a software company land a multi-million-dollar state contract. How the spooks took over the news [ 06/18/09 ] "In his controversial new book, Nick Davies argues that shadowy intelligence agencies are pumping out black propaganda to manipulate public opinion – and that the media simply swallow it wholesale ... The "Zarqawi letter" which made it on to the front page of The New York Times in February 2004 was one of a sequence of highly suspect documents which were said to have been written either by or to Zarqawi and which were fed into news media. This material is being generated, in part, by intelligence agencies who continue to work without effective oversight; and also by a new and essentially benign structure of "strategic communications" which was originally designed by doves in the Pentagon and Nato who wanted to use subtle and non-violent tactics to deal with Islamist terrorism but whose efforts are poorly regulated and badly supervised with the result that some of its practitioners are breaking loose and engaging in the black arts of propaganda ..."
Win At All Costs: Government Misconduct 'In The Name of Expedient Justice' [ 06/18/09 ] Ten Part Series "Hundreds of times during the past 10 years, federal agents and prosecutors have pursued justice by breaking the law. They lied, hid evidence, distorted facts, engaged in cover-ups, paid for perjury and set up innocent people in a relentless effort to win indictments, guilty pleas and convictions, a two-year Post-Gazette investigation found. Rarely were these federal officials punished for their misconduct. Rarely did they admit their conduct was wrong. New laws and court rulings that encourage federal law enforcement officers to press the boundaries of their power while providing few safeguards against abuse fueled their actions. Victims of this misconduct sometimes lost their jobs, assets and even families. Some remain in prison because prosecutors withheld favorable evidence or allowed fabricated testimony. Some criminals walk free as a reward for conspiring with the government in its effort to deny others their rights ..." Fired IG Calls White House Explanation 'Baseless,' Says He's Being Targeted [ 06/17/09 ] "The government watchdog President Obama canned for allegedly being "confused" and "disoriented" fired back sharply Wednesday, saying the White House explanation for removing him was "insufficient," "baseless" and "absolutely wild." Gerald Walpin, who until last week was the inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service, told FOXNews.com that part of Obama's explanation was a "total lie" and that he feels he's got a target on his back for political reasons. .... Facing bipartisan criticism for the firing, Obama sought to allay congressional concerns with a letter to Senate leaders Tuesday evening explaining his decision. In the letter, White House Special Counsel Norman Eisen wrote that Walpin was "confused" and "disoriented" at a May board meeting, was "unduly disruptive," and exhibited a "lack of candor" in providing information to decision makers. ... "That's a total lie," Walpin said of the latter charge. And he said the accusation that he was dazed and confused at one meeting out of many was not only false, but poor rationale for his ouster. "It appears to suggest that I was removed because I was disabled -- based on one occasion out of hundreds," he said. "I would never say President Obama doesn't have the capacity to continue to serve because of his (statement) that there are 56 states," Walpin said, adding that the same holds for Vice President Biden and his "many express confusions that have been highlighted by the media." Obama mistakenly said once on the campaign trail that he had traveled to 57 states.
Walpin concluded that his firing stems from bad blood between him and the board, as well as with Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson -- an Obama supporter whom he had investigated for alleged misuse of federal funds. He said his performance at the May meeting drew criticism because he issued two reports critical of the board. In one, he criticized the settlement reached in the Johnson case; in the other, he criticized the use of millions of dollars for a program at the City University of New York. "The board at that meeting was clearly angry at my temerity," he said. The White House, in its rationale for giving Walpin the boot, also complained that Walpin was "absent" from the corporation's headquarters, "insisting" on working from home in New York over the "objections" of the board. Walpin, though, said he reached an agreement with the agency early this year that would allow him to work from home. The former inspector general, who was appointed by George W. Bush, said he originally was going to resign before Obama took office because his wife of 52 years was not happy with their "commuting marriage" -- he was commuting weekly from New York to Washington. He notified Bush of his intention to leave, but said his staff convinced him to reconsider. In the end, Walpin said he worked out an agreement with corporation leaders under which he would travel to Washington two or more times a week, and spend the rest of the time working from home in New York. He said some board members had initial reservations, but they were resolved. "I never had a single objection" before reading Tuesday's letter from the White House, he said. "
US manufacturing must drive recovery, summit told [ 06/17/09 ] "A revived manufacturing sector is critical to leading a recovery of the slumping US economy, underscoring the need for new policies, business leaders told a national economic summit. The second day Tuesday of the Detroit, Michigan summit seeking an economic strategy offered more comments on the critical importance of the industrial sector in view of the global crisis. Politicians share personality traits with serial killers: Study [ 06/16/09 ] "Using his law enforcement experience and data drawn from the FBI's behavioral analysis unit, Jim Kouri has collected a series of personality traits common to a couple of professions. Kouri, who's a vice president of the National Assn. of Chiefs of Police, has assembled traits such as superficial charm, an exaggerated sense of self-worth, glibness, lying, lack of remorse and manipulation of others. These traits, Kouri points out in his analysis, are common to psychopathic serial killers. But -- and here's the part that may spark some controversy and defensive discussion -- these traits are also common to American politicians. (Maybe you already suspected.) Yup. Violent homicide aside, our elected officials often show many of the exact same character traits as criminal nut-jobs, who run from police but not for office. Kouri notes that these criminals are psychologically capable of committing their dirty deeds free of any concern for social, moral or legal consequences and with absolutely no remorse. "This allows them to do what they want, whenever they want," he wrote. "Ironically, these same traits exist in men and women who are drawn to high-profile and powerful positions in society including political officeholders." ... "While many political leaders will deny the assessment regarding their similarities with serial killers and other career criminals, it is part of a psychopathic profile that may be used in assessing the behaviors of many officials and lawmakers at all levels of government ..."
'Buy American' Limits Threaten Trade War [ 06/16/09 ] "The Buy American language in the stimulus was meant to exempt trade with countries that had ratified the World Trade Organization's Government Procurement Agreement or NAFTA. NAFTA members are the U.S., Canada and Mexico. But those treaties fully bind the U.S. and Canada only at the federal level. No Canadian provinces participate. While 40 states observe the pacts, most have exceptions for sensitive goods. Few U.S. cities are covered by the deals. Such distinctions made little difference before the stimulus bill became law. But now, fearing a loss of aid money, many U.S. state and local governments are going further than they need to and are rejecting contract bids from firms that use Canadian components. Canada's local governments are already threatening retaliation. On June 5, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities passed a resolution requiring that members limit government procurement from abroad to countries that themselves do not bar Canadian companies from such competition. This would give European, Japanese, Chinese and Korean firms a leg up over U.S. competitors. The federation gave the U.S. 120 days to fix the problem before the decision takes effect. There's a risk of long-term damage to North American supply chains. Much of U.S.-Canadian trade involves goods crossing the border multiple times before the products in which they're used are finally completed. Indeed, supply chain integration has long been one of the main benefits of NAFTA, given its role in increasing trade and lowering production costs. Casinos File $267M Racketeering Lawsuit Against former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich [ 06/15/09 ] "Three casino companies have filed a $267 million racketeering lawsuit against former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and a prominent racetrack owner over a controversial law that requires casinos to funnel part of their revenues to struggling horse tracks. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago Friday, grew out of a federal investigation into an alleged pay-to-play scheme the former governor is accused of running. A federal affidavit alleged Mr. Blagojevich attempted to pressure John Johnston, whose family owns and operates several tracks in the Chicago area, for a $100,000 contribution in return for the governor's signature on legislation to help the struggling horse-racing industry. The legislation requires the state's four top-earning casinos to give 3% of their gross adjusted annual revenues to the horse-racing industry ..."
Secret papers 'show how Shell targeted Nigeria oil protests' [ 06/15/09 ] "... Serious questions over Shell Oil's alleged involvement in human rights abuses in Nigeria emerged last night after confidential internal documents and court statements revealed how the energy giant enlisted the help of the country's brutal former military government to deal with protesters. The documents, seen by the IoS, support allegations that Shell helped to provide Nigerian police and military with logistical support, and aided security sweeps of the oil-rich Niger Delta. Earlier this month Shell agreed to pay $15.5m (£9.6m) in a "humanitarian settlement" on the eve of a highly embarrassing US lawsuit. One of the allegations was that Shell was complicit in the regime's execution of civilians. The Anglo-Dutch firm denies any wrongdoing and said it settled to help "reconciliation". But the documents contain detailed allegations of the extent to which Shell is said to have co-opted the Nigerian military to protect its interests ..."

Since 1980, US productivity declined with the dollar in a race to the bottom. The results may be seen quantified at the CIA's 'World Fact Book' where the US is at the bottom of a list of nations with the world's largest negative current account balance. It is not coincidental that America became the world's largest net debtor nation as it joined the ranks of the most inequitable."
WHO Report on World Drug Use Suppressed By US [ 06/14/09 ] "... At the point where mild cocaine use was described in positive tones the Americans presumably blew some kind of outrage fuse. This report was never published because the US representative to the WHO threatened to withdraw US funding for all its research projects and interventions unless the organisation "dissociated itself from the study" and cancelled publication. According to the WHO this document does not exist, (although you can read a leaked copy PDF ). Drugs show the classic problem for evidence-based social policy. It may well be that prohibition, and distribution of drugs by criminals, gives worse results for the outcomes we think are important, such as harm to the user and to communities through crime. But equally, we may tolerate these outcomes, because we decide it is more important that we declare ourselves to disapprove of drug use. It's okay to do that. You can have policies that go against your stated outcomes, for moral or political reasons: but that doesn't mean you can hide the evidence ..."

With the United States looking to cut defense costs and rethinking the way it fights wars, many defense companies are looking for international buyers to take the big, pricey weapons that the Pentagon no longer wants or needs fewer of. CIA Secrecy In Pakistan Hides Abuses [ 06/14/09 ] "U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's refusal to share with other agencies even the most basic data on the bombing attacks by remote-controlled unmanned predator drones in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region, combined with recent revelations that CIA operatives have been paying Pakistanis to identify the targets, suggests that managers of the drone attacks programmes have been using the total secrecy surrounding the programme to hide abuses and high civilian casualties. Intelligence analysts have been unable to obtain either the list of military targets of the drone strikes or the actual results in terms of al Qaeda or civilians killed, according to a Washington source familiar with internal discussion of the drone strike programme. The source insisted on not being identified because of the extreme sensitivity of the issue. "They can't find out anything about the programme," the source told IPS. That has made it impossible for other government agencies to judge its real consequences, according to the source ..."

This is a rare occasion when the official media has taken such an aggressive stance on India. A federal judge imposed the 40-month sentence after viewing hospital security footage of William Cozzi, 52, handcuffing the man to the chair in an emergency room. Cozzi then shackled the man's legs to the chair and struck him with a sap, a weapon similar to a small blackjack club with a heavy center and usually covered in leather. The officer later accused the man of attacking him. "We expect the police officers to serve and protect the public and not to do the kinds of things you admit you did," U.S. District Judge Blanche M. TX: Teen with profound mental disabilities gets 100-year sentence [ 06/11/09 ] "When an
18-year-old with profound mental disabilities performed sexual acts on a 6-year-old neighbor, the small town of Paris, Texas, was unforgiving. But Aaron Hart's punishment – 100 years in prison for a single incident – has stunned veteran disability rights advocates, who believed counseling, probation or even placement in a group home would have sufficed for a first-time offender with the mental maturity of a second-grader. .... "Aaron is 18, never committed a felony, had no violent record. He couldn't understand the seriousness of what he did," said his father, Robert Hart. "I never dreamed they would think about sending him to prison. When they said 100 years – it was terror, pure terror to me." The sentence raises serious questions about how people with profound disabilities are prosecuted in Texas, at a time when both state lawmakers and the U.S. Supreme Court are considering the appropriate punishment for people who are young, mentally disabled, or both. Repeat child molesters and rapists routinely receive lesser sentences than Hart's. Also at issue is Hart's trial. His defense attorney hardly questioned his client's competency to stand trial, his appellate lawyer said. And though both the judge and jurors say they would have preferred not to send Hart to prison, state care facilities and group homes for disabled offenders were never presented as options. "It's not just abnormal. It's absurd. I wouldn't think a sentence would go above a few years in a situation like this," said Daniel Benson, a Texas Tech law professor and author of textbooks on criminal offenders with mental illness. "That's not helpful to society or the offender." Lamar County and District Attorney Gary Young said that while he sympathizes with Hart's "mental health challenges," he stands by his decision to prosecute Hart on five counts related to the incident. It's common for prosecutors to pursue several charges in a case involving one incident, not knowing which charge the jury will support. "I hope people will remember he committed a violent sexual crime against a little boy," Young said. David Pearson, Hart's appellate attorney, said he's never seen a worse miscarriage of justice ..." Supreme Court Nominee Sotomayor Turned Down Appeal Of Inmate Exonerated Of Murder [ 06/10/09 ] "Jeffrey Deskovic heard a TV talk show host announce President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court last month, and his mind raced. That name; he remembered that name. He emerged from bed and riffled through the boxes of motions, appeals and letters he had accumulated in the 16 years he spent in a New York prison for a rape and murder he did not commit. And there it was, a ruling from the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, dated April 26, 2000, and barely two pages long. It was co-written by Sonia Sotomayor. “We have considered all of petitioner-appellant’s arguments and find them to be without merit,” the ruling said ... Imprisoned at the age of 16 for the killing of a high school classmate, Mr. Deskovic, now 35, filed a habeas corpus petition in 1997 in Federal District Court contesting his conviction. The court denied the request because the paperwork had arrived four days late. Mr. Deskovic and one of his lawyers — who he said had been misinformed about the deadline for filing — appealed the decision to the federal appellate court on which Ms. Sotomayor sat. Ms. Sotomayor, along with the other judge on the panel, ruled that the lawyer’s mistake did not “rise to the level of an extraordinary circumstance” that would compel them to forgive the delay. There was no need to look at the evidence that Mr. Deskovic insisted would affirm his innocence, they said. Mr. Deskovic spent six more years behind bars, until DNA found in the victim not only cleared him, but connected another man to the crime...."
Lieberman Threatens To Shut Down Senate Over Detainee Photos [ 06/10/09 ] "House Democrats are insisting on hearings before they even consider signing onto the Senate's move to suppress detainee photographs, House Financial Services Committee chair Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said Monday night. The Lieberman-Graham amendment, which would empower the Pentagon to block the photos for up to three years without review, has sharply curtailed House support for the congressional war supplemental, as has a $108 billion line of credit for the International Monetary Fund. The Huffington Post confirmed Monday night that Lieberman-Graham had been removed from the bill in conference. Antiwar Democrats who oppose the IMF funding can compromise on that issue, Frank said, but Lieberman-Graham, which would supersede the Freedom of Information Act, is different. Detainee Photo Suppression Amendment Dropped From Supplemental [ 06/09/09 ] "Lieberman-Graham Amendment Removed From Supplemental. Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake.com is reporting that the Lieberman-Graham amendment to suppress detainee photos "is out of the conference report of the supplemental." ... The IMF provision is still in the bill and is a top Obama priority. It came under fierce attack from House Republicans who wanted a "clean" war supplemental and many Democrats had no love the the extension of the credit line. Democrats on the left have long opposed the IMF for forcing developing nations to cut social spending in exchange for IMF loans. Democrats in the center were having a hard time explaining to constituents at home why now was the time to extend the credit to the IMF, especially as Republicans -- aided by the conservative blog RedState -- ripped it as a US taxpayer-funded bailout for foreign countries."

"From July 1, every PC will be shipped with the software before it is sold to customers," said a member of the company's marketing department, who identified herself only as Miss Zhou. "This is very good news for users, so they should not uninstall it. It will automatically filter pornographic images and antirevolutionary content. It will not take up much space on the hard drive. Key figures in global battle against illegal arms trade lost in Air France crash [ 06/08/09 ] "Amid the media frenzy and speculation over the disappearance of Air France's ill-fated Flight 447, the loss of two of the world's most prominent figures in the war on the illegal arms trade and international drug trafficking has been virtually overlooked. Pablo Dreyfus, a 39-year-old Argentine who was travelling with his wife Ana Carolina Rodrigues aboard the doomed flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, had worked tirelessly with the Brazilian authorities to stem the flow of arms and ammunition that for years has fuelled the bloody turf wars waged by drug gangs in Rio's sprawling favelas. Also travelling with Dreyfus on the doomed flight was his friend and colleague Ronald Dreyer, a Swiss diplomat and co-ordinator of the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence who had worked with UN missions in El Salvador, Mozambique, Azerbaijan, Kosovo and Angola. Both men were consultants at the Small Arms Survey, an independent think tank based at Geneva's Graduate Institute of International Studies. An international fleet of aircraft and ships has been searching the open Atlantic in the hopes of finding clues of whereabouts of the Air France flight 447 that vanished mysteriously. The airliner came down early Monday as it was heading from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The cause of the incident is not known. Note: What the New York Times article seems to be missing is that a change in the law to do this would permit the establishment of permanent patsies for 9/11, tortured into pleading guilty and imprisoned or executed, taking the blame for what the real perpetrators have done. In reality, no one at Guantanamo Bay, or any other prisoner in custody on the planet, had anything to do with the 9/11 debacle.

But officials said it was not clear whether the autopilot had been switched off by the pilots, or had cut out because it received conflicting airspeed readings. The mystery over what happened to flight AF447 deepened when French weather experts said there was no evidence the aircraft had encountered "exceptional" atmospheric conditions. The Airbus A330-200 flying from Rio to Paris disappeared 'without trace' over the Atlantic on Sunday night with 228 people on board."

Industry Defends Federal Loophole for Drilling Before Packed Congressional Hearing [ 06/06/09 ] "In a packed and sometimes contentious hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday, representatives of the oil and gas industry and their state regulators vigorously defended the practice of injecting toxic fluids underground without federal regulatory oversight. The House Energy and Minerals subcommittee called the hearing to explore the economic and environmental risks associated with the practice, called hydraulic fracturing, after a string of reports of water contamination related to drilling across the country were reported by ProPublica. Hydraulic fracturing is currently exempted from the Safe Drinking Water Act, but both the House and Senate are drawing up legislation that would close the Bush-era loophole and reinstate the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority over the fracturing process. The House version of the bill, which would also require drilling companies to disclose the names and amounts of the chemicals they inject underground, is expected to be introduced Tuesday..."

OPED: Israel controlled by religious fanaticism [ 06/06/09 ] by Shulamit Aloni "Not very long ago, during Rabbi Meir Kahane's racist rantings, the late writer and journalist Amos Elon gave me a copy of a letter Lord Rothschild sent to Herzl in August 1902. In the letter, Rothschild explains why he refuses to support the establishment of a Jewish state in the Land of Israel. He writes that he "should view with horror the establishment of a Jewish colony pure and simple; such a colony would be Imperium Imperio; it would be a Ghetto with the prejudice of the Ghetto; it would be a small petty Jewish state, orthodox and illiberal, excluding the Gentile and the Christian." Nevertheless, and despite phenomena like Kahane, the hope prevailed here over the years that Rothschild's harsh vision would prove false; that Israel would indeed "ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex," and "guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture," as stated in the Declaration of the Establishment of the State ... For 42 years we have been occupying, oppressing and stealing lands that are not ours. To be free in our land do we need to become thieving Cossacks, uprooters of trees, burners of fields and harassers of women, the elderly and the very young? "We have this land, we have it," goes the song, but what should have been said is "We have the power, we have it, we have the money, we have it, and we are allowed, we are," to starve an entire population, imprison it and annihilate it using air strikes, cluster bombs and white phosphorous ... "A unique people," wrote David Ben-Gurion. Alas, for that uniqueness. Instead of a Jewish and democratic state they have delivered us a Jewish state controlled by religious fanaticism, one that maintains the purity of the race. They have delivered a democracy in the most primitive sense - not the preservation of democratic values but rule by the demos, the populace that is dictating the transformation of Israel into a totalitarian ethnocracy. Hooray for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman - they are eradicating everything we built, everything we dreamed about and everything we fought for ..."

Statistical Significance: GM Dealership's Who Donated to Hillary Clinton Stay Open [ 06/02/09 ] "... An analysis of the closures and found a very strong correlation between dealerships that were saved, and dealerships that donated heavily to Hillary Clinton last year. Why should that matter? Because Obama’s guy in the Auto Task Force is Steven Rattner, hedge fund star, big pal to Times owner Pinch Sulzberger, former bigwig at Lazard Freres, and former journalist himself. And Rattner is married to Maureen White, who was once Hillary’s National Finance Chairman. So the theory here is that White and Rattner got together and made a Santa-Claus style list of “good” dealers and “bad” dealers ..."
Missing French jet likely in deep ocean [ 06/02/09 ] "A missing Air France jet carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris ran into a towering wall of thunderstorms over the Atlantic Ocean, officials said Monday, fearing that all aboard were lost ... Experts said the absence of a mayday call meant something happened very quickly. "The conclusion to be drawn is that something catastrophic happened on board that has caused this airplane to ditch in a controlled or an uncontrolled fashion," Jane's Aviation analyst Chris Yates told The Associated Press. "Potentially it went down very quickly and so quickly that the pilot on board didn't have a chance to make that emergency call." ...The area where the plane could have gone down was vast, in the middle of very deep Atlantic Ocean waters between Brazil and the coast of Africa. Brazil’s military searched for it off its northeast coast, while the French military scoured the ocean near the Cape Verde Islands off the West African coast. "

MPs' expenses scandal spreads to the US: Capitol Hill snouts also in the trough? [ 06/01/09 ] "Politicians spending taxpayers' money to lease a 2008 luxury Lexus hybrid sedan, a digital camera and two 46-inch Sony TVs, a top-of-the-line laptop for use in hostile environments. No, not the latest Telegraph revelations of MPs' expenses in Britain but a report by the Wall Street Journal - inspired by the Telegraph's scoop - outlining how some members of the United States Congress aren't averse to treating themselves to a few little luxuries. There's much less scope for those on Capitol Hill to line their own pockets in the way that some MPs have done. Members of Congress can't bill taxpayers for personal living expenses and their allowance covers only "official and representational expenses". Members of the House of Representatives get a government expense allowance of $1.3 million to $1.9 million [£800,000 to £1.2 million] a year while Senators get $2.9 million to $4.5 million [£1.8 million to £2.8 million]. The exact amount depends on several variables, the most significant being the distance from Washington DC of the member's district or state...."
Israel Throws Out Proposed 'Loyalty Law' [ 06/01/09 ] "The Israeli government on Sunday threw out a proposal aimed at minority Arabs to require an oath of loyalty to Israel as a Jewish state or risk losing their citizenship, dealing a blow to the country's ultranationalist foreign minister, who spearheaded the proposal. Avigdor Lieberman, a (former nightclub bouncer) rising force in Israeli politics, made the proposal a central plank of his election campaign last February. The message, which sought to play on the perceived disloyalty of Israel's Arab citizens, helped propel his Yisrael Beitenu Party to a strong third place finish in the parliamentary vote. ..."
