build a site

Warning: this page is for beginners - I hope to help you figure out:
  1. where your site will live
  2. how to write HTML
  3. what to write it with
  4. how to get it from your PC to #1
  5. other stuff and resources.
  1. Get yourself some Webspace. Chances are, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) includes webspace in your monthly internet fee. Mine for example gives me 20MB space. Visit your company's website or call, they will probably be glad to help. Or, if you are looking for a "free" site, visit:

    • gURLpages is OK. I made a little website to show you how easy it is, and included some tips. I would suggest them for a beginner or someone who doesn't want to get involved with FTP or CGI. If you are looking for advanced features, get yourself an ISP that includes webspace.

    • The Free Webpage Provider Review 4.0 is a great search engine for finding a free webpage provider that suits your needs. Be sure to read the user comments!

  2. Visit Webmonkey For Kids. Don't let the name fool you, this site is for kids and adults alike. It is my FAVORITE site so far for learning how to make a webpage... from ISP, to FTP to HTML. Visit and read the entire site. You will understand the process after reading this tutorial. The tools section has great info such as extended characters, a very nice color chart, and a HTML cheat sheet.

  3. Now you will need to download a HTML editor. I really like Arachnophilia 3.9. All you need to know is a little HTML to start. If you visited Webmonkey, you should be ready to go! NOTE: you don't necessarily need this program. Some people use their word processor, but programs such as Arachnophilia allow you to preview your changes as you make them (on or off-line), display your tags in a different color, so it is easier to read your code, and so on... Plus, the program is completely free - NOT shareware.

  4. If you've gone with space from your ISP, you will need a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program to upload your files to their server. LeechFTP is my favorite FTP program I've found so far. Easy to use, and it won't leave a hole in your pocket, because like Arachnophilia, it too is a free program. Save your server info as a bookmark for easy log-in every time.
