The Quest For Sailor Moon:
Fansub Distributor List

updated 05.30.00

Intro:
The purpose of this page is to let you know which of the 200 SM episodes are available as fansubs online. Before you request any tapes, at the VERY least, please read this page first. It will only take a moment. Here is another that I would suggest reading too. Please take care when requesting fansubs.

FYI: Sorry I am unable to make copies of these tapes for people... I have two VCR's but I only have VHS [as opposed to SVHS] tapes ordered from VKLL, and they wouldn't look as good... plus, I work full time, go to school part time, and am lazy. I never get anything done in a timely manner! ;-)

Hope this page helps!
- Cheri.

Please read the notes at the bottom of the page for a little more info.

Pop Quiz!
Q:   Who or what is a distributor?
A:   It is a person or small group that makes copies of fan-subtitled Japanese animation for you at COST. They do it out of the goodness of their hearts so you should appreciate them and be very nice.

Here we are at the moment... According to VKLL SMS and SS are scheduled to appear on NA TV. Some may consider this good news, I'm not going to give my opinion on the subject, since I hate dubbed anime. Oops! I said it anyway!

All three movies, R, S and SuperS are for sale in stores on VHS and DVD. If you like to order online, try places like buy.com or 800.com.

Get on those mailing lists! The SMR DVD for example costs ~$30 retail at local stores, but buy it at Buy.com and pay $16.99. I don't pay sales tax (only CA, TN and MA residents pay sales tax), and I wait until they have their special weekends with free shipping (you can pre-order stuff too, and you won't get charged for shipping when they are finally sent to you). FYI, the SMR movie subbed on VHS is 9.99 and subtitled is 15.99 at Buy.com.

The current fansubs available are seasons:

SuperS Special/Ami's First Love = 1 volume
Sailor Moon Sailor Stars episodes 167-200 = 9 volumes

Distributors:
VKLL
Kodocha
Starbase Praxis
*they are the only ones that still have all seasons listed as available for requests.
Always Anime
*still have S and SS seasons listed as available.
VAF
*still has S and SS seasons and movies listed as available.

Mina Arnold's Subtitled Videos - Here's a strange one. I wouldn't suggest it for the normal tapes, but she has several tapes that you don't normally find - specials, live action, etc... read site carefully - I haven't ordered from here before. I'd love any remarks if you have. Thanks!

VAF also has some live-action tapes available (raw).

NOTES
  • Please remember that these are only fansubs. They will not have the same professional subtitling, audio or video quality of commercially released tapes.

  • My personal faves are VKLL and Kodocha - I've ordered from both and haven't had any problems. Watch for the quality of source tapes on all the others (VHS vs. SVHS, etc...). I have not ordered from Always Anime or VAF.

  • If you have problems with a tape you recieve, first read the FAQ/Q&A page of the distributor for instructions - if none, just email. It usually isn't a big problem to get a new one sent to you, or send yours back for re-taping - they send out a lot of tapes and may not be able to check each one before they go out. Don't get upset if this is an inconvience to you... they put in 10x the effort just to send these tapes to you in the first place.

  • Please do not send unnecessary e-mail to fansub distributors. Read the ordering instructions and notes FIRST. Nine times out of ten you will answer your own question. And whatever you do, don't e-mail "wondering where your tapes are" unless you have waited LONGER than the posted expected wait time. Once again, they are doing us a favor, so show them a little courtesy.

  • In case Kodocha is new to you, I really like their service, and find their ratings to be on the money.

  • If you have any comments or questions concerning fansubs, please e-mail me at jackson@cco.net!
